About Reiki

Reiki works with the natural energy systems in and around the body—systems that have been recognized for centuries in Eastern traditions, like meridians and chakras. Today, even modern science and quantum physics are beginning to describe similar ideas through the study of energy fields (sometimes called biofields) that surround all living beings, as well as the flow of energy through our cells, nervous system, and organs.

When that energy becomes blocked, depleted, or overstimulated, it can show up as stress, tension, or dis-ease—physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. Reiki helps to gently rebalance that flow, encouraging the body’s own ability to restore itself to a more calm and harmonious state.

As a Reiki practitioner, I don’t “give” healing—I simply serve as a channel for the universal life energy that’s already all around and within us. The true healing happens within the recipient, who draws in that energy and uses it in whatever way is most needed at the time.

What To Expect

During a Reiki session, I gently place my hands either lightly on or just above your body, moving through a series of hand positions. I spend a few minutes in each position, tuning into the energy and noticing any shifts—this might feel like warmth, tingling, pulsing, or a gentle sense of movement.

Reiki encourages your body to enter a deeply relaxed state. As your nervous system calms, you may feel lighter, more grounded, sleepy, or simply at peace. Everyone experiences Reiki differently—some people feel sensations right away, while others just notice how relaxed or refreshed they feel afterward.

To support your experience, I often incorporate soft, calming music. Music naturally helps the body relax, release feel-good chemicals like endorphins, and move into a meditative, healing state. It’s a beautiful complement to the Reiki energy.

Sessions typically last about an hour. The number of sessions you may benefit from depends on what you’re needing support with—whether it’s stress relief, emotional healing, or ongoing energetic balance.

History

Reiki is a gentle, energy-based healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. It was founded by Mikao Usui, a spiritual seeker and teacher who, after a period of meditation, fasting, and prayer on Mount Kurama in 1922, experienced a profound spiritual awakening. This awakening gave him the ability to channel healing energy through his hands—what we now call Reiki, which translates roughly to “universal life energy.”

Usui went on to share Reiki with many people in Japan, emphasizing not just the healing practice, but also a way of life grounded in compassion and self-awareness. He taught that Reiki is most powerful when practiced with pure intention and a centered heart.

He offered five simple yet profound principles to be recited daily, which are still central to Reiki today:

  • Just for today, do not anger.

  • Just for today, do not worry.

  • Just for today, be filled with gratitude.

  • Just for today, devote yourself to your work.

  • Just for today, be kind to others.

These are known as the Five Reiki Precepts (or admonitions), encouraging emotional clarity, integrity, and compassion in everyday life.

Reiki eventually made its way to the West through Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman who learned Reiki in Japan in the 1930s after seeking healing for her own ailments. She trained under one of Usui’s students, Chujiro Hayashi, and became a Reiki Master herself. Upon returning to Hawaii, she began teaching Reiki throughout the U.S., adapting and preserving its core teachings while making it accessible to Western students.

Thanks to the efforts of Mikao Usui, Hawayo Takata, and the lineage of Reiki Masters that followed, Reiki is now practiced worldwide as a powerful tool for stress relief, emotional healing, and spiritual connection.
